Fefe Says…

Happy Mother’s Day! Best Television Moms

Posted in Television by Felicia on May 9, 2010

As we celebrate our mothers in the real world today, we can’t forget the mothers of our favorite television shows.  What would our lives be like without them?  I’m counting down my top three.

3.  Edna Garrett (The Facts of Life)—Okay, so I know that Mrs. Garret wasn’t the actual mother of Blair, Natalie, Tootie, and Jo—but she did take care of them like they were her own daughters.  And let’s face it, she was kind of a mother to us too.

Jo: I hate Winter Carnival. Every bozo in town is going around singing their head off.
Mrs. Garrett: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

2.  Roseanne Conner (Roseanne)—Roseanne was like a breath of fresh air in the television sitcom world.  She told it like it was, with sarcasm and a loud voice to back it up.  And even though she didn’t always act like the typical “cookie cutter” mother, she really wanted the best for everyone.  She laughed a lot, and that’s what made me love her.

Roseanne: What’s the worst that can happen? So the tornado picks up our house and slams it down in a better neighborhood.

1. Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)—This is a no brainer.  Lorelai has to be the coolest mother on the whole entire planet.  She knows pop culture better than anyone, is fashionable from head to toe, and can come up with witty one-liners in an instant.  And the best thing?  She’ll always be your best friend.

Rory: Hey, you called my cell.
Lorelai: I know.
Rory: I told you to call my landline. My cell phone bill’s astronomical.
Lorelai: But a conversation with me: priceless.

Do you agree?  Who are your favorites?

I loved Roseanne’s show when it was on. It was truly ground breaking. People failed and there was no back up plan. The happy ending at the end of the show might be that the situation was over for the time being. But these people loved each other fiercely and completely.
